What is a Heat Exchanger?
A heat exchanger is a device for transferring heat from one medium to another. It is also one of the most important parts of your furnace. When your furnace burners ignite, the flames are directed into the heat exchanger where the gasses heat up its metal walls. On the inside of the heat exchanger, the gasses (which include carbon monoxide) are then vented out of the furnace. The Furnace fan blows air over the hot heat exchanger and the warm air is distributed through your ductwork.
Dangers of Heat Exchanger
The biggest danger is a crack in the heat exchanger. Which can release carbon monoxide into the home. Normally, the combustion gasses are contained within the heat exchanger and vented out of your home. If there is a crack, carbon monoxide can leak out of the heat exchanger and be distributed throughout the air in your home. This can be dangerous and lead to shortness of breath, illness and even death in severe circumstances.
How to Stay Safe
The best way to avoid the threat of a cracked heat exchanger is to have preventive maintenance performed on your furnace before every heating season. A trained technician can identify any cracks in your heat exchanger and eliminate risks before they pose any threats to you or your family. If you have any questions about a cracked heat exchanger, or if you’d like to have your unit inspected by a trained professional, contact Sevierville Heating and Air, or your local HVAC company.
